In today’s world, with all the resources available thanks to the world wide web, authors have so many more ways to engage with their potential readers and fellow writers. But with that comes a lot of new responsibilities.
I have finally had to designate specific tasks for specific days in my week if I can even hope to accomplish many of the other things that aren’t actually writing the books.
Here’s what my schedule looks like in a typical week:
MONDAY
Catch up on unread author and publisher newsletters from the past week.
Work on drafting the next book.
TUESDAY
Research and vet agents who represent the horror genre and see who’s open for queries.
Send out 3-5 queries.
Deal with requests and rejections.
WEDNESDAY
Check socials for any agent and publisher updates. Currently, I check Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Threads.
Work on drafting the next book.
THURSDAY
Go through the weekly newsletter from Query Tracker for updates on agents currently accepting queries and their specific wishlists.
Create a weekly blog post for writers and readers, get it up on WordPress, and then post the links on all my socials.
On the 3rd Thursday of every month, create and send out my free monthly author newsletter. If you’d like to check it out:

FRIDAY
Host a Zoom chat with some fellow writers where we talk craft, promotion, and all things writing.
Research and vet agents who represent the suspense/thriller genre and see who’s open for queries.
Send out 3-5 queries.
Work on drafting the next book.
SATURDAY
Attend webinars or catch up on missed videos.
Work on drafting the next book.
SUNDAY
Take the day off to clear my head, enjoy some personal reading time, and try to have at least one adventure, no matter how small.
So the next time you pick up a book, remember all the behind the scenes things that author does in conjunction with writing.
