I can’t imagine not having writing in my life, but for those who romanticize about what being a writer is like, here’s my top 5 best and worst things about choosing to put words to the page and work toward getting books out into the world.
THE HARDEST PARTS ABOUT BEING A WRITER
- Juggling all the *life* things (work/obligations/errands/relationships) and actually finding time to put pen to paper.
- Staying in it for the long haul (writing/revising/querying/building an author platform).
- Isolation and loneliness. For the most part, writing is a solitary activity.
- Being able to tap into your creativity every time you sit down to write (deciding what to write about or figuring out the next scene for your current WIP).
- Imposter syndrome (that voice of self-doubt that says you aren’t good enough/who do you think you are?)
THE BEST PARTS ABOUT BEING A WRITER
- Getting excited to get back to your book and see where your characters take you next.
- Sharing stories with readers.
- Networking and supporting other writers.
- Picturing where my books will fit in with those already out there.
- Dreaming big (getting an agent/getting a book deal/launch parties/book signings).
Being a writer is hard work and goals and wins can take forever to be realized, but I can’t imagine a life without writing. How about you?
