I’m feeling fairly confident with the process I’ve created to make time to write consistently, usually scoring 3 to 4 sessions every single week.
But I have also found that changing circumstances can definitely affect my writing sessions, sometimes becoming distraction sessions. One of the biggest factors that can pull me away from achieving successful creative sessions is the location where I write.
Certain locations equal incredible sessions, while other spots either stifle or completely derail my progress.
My Outdoor Nook
My outdoor nook is by far my most creative space. The smell of a fresh breeze, leaves rustling, and birds
singing surrounds me with nature’s symphony, clearing my mind of all distractions. (Sadly, I live in a 4 season location so for at least 5 months out of the year it’s just too cold to write outside.)
My Home Office Writing Space
I have set up my home office/writing room for success. I have everything I need at my fingertips, from
pens/pencils/laptop/desktop/notebooks/craft books/index cards/file folders, and anything else that
might inspire my creative process. Sprinkle in a candle or two, some twinkle lights around the window,
inspiring wall art and my favorite mug, and I’m all set.
The Town Boardwalk
The boardwalk where I live features a quaint small town feel where there are people around, but not
enough to become a distraction. The sounds of the fountain remind me of a babbling brook, the
wooden structure has throughways where I can stay dry if it rains, there’s a public bathroom on one
end, and the town library on the other. It’s a great place to people watch. There are benches
throughout the area and a green space behind. All I need is a notebook and my favorite pen.
The Library
Because I live in a small town, we only have one library, and it isn’t open every day, but it’s another creative space that offers little private nooks, big comfy chairs, and a coffee station, as well as free wifi, and even
computers in case I forget my laptop. And let’s face it – who wouldn’t be inspired to write while surrounded
by books.
The Beach
Our town is lucky enough to have 2 beautiful beaches. Agimak beach is a 2 minute drive from my house
and it’s located in a residential area. West Beach, about 5 minutes away down the highway, is my
preferred writing spot. One area has picnic tables, there are lounge chairs on the beach facing the water,
and the parking area is lined with huge boulders, many flat enough to sit on. There’s also a public
bathroom. The soothing sounds of the waves lapping up on the beach, the warmth of the summer sun,
and the sounds of boats in the distance, coupled with the friendly birds, makes this location a great
place to write.
Not only are these spots great places to write, they are also great places to read.
