My Writing Spaces

The spaces where I choose to write greatly influence my productivity and creativity. And yes, I said spaces because I have an indoor and an outdoor writing area. I’m lucky enough to have a bedroom in my home that I turned into a writing space with room enough for all my office supplies, notebooks, craft books and anything else I need to stay productive.

Above is a picture of my outdoor writing nook. With winter ending and spring beginning, I’m eager to be able to get back to spending my time outdoors, listening to the sounds of nature and smelling the fresh air.

For those who haven’t heard of a writing nook, let me describe mine to you. It’s like an outdoor shed, but it’s set up to be a relaxing and inspiring space rather than a storage space. My rocking chair sits in the corner. It’s a great spot to sit comfortably reading a book or enjoying a break. I have two other chairs, one that I use to sit at my desk, and the other one because when I’m not writing inside this lovely space, I can enjoy having a couple of visitors. There’s also a small shelf where I can keep notebooks, a clock, pens, pencils, clips, post-its, and anything else I might need while I’m out there.

One of the fun things about having this nook built for me was designing it with the colors that I picked to represent my genres, colors I will eventually use when I build my website. Red, black and white say suspense/thriller/horror to me.

There are a couple pieces of artwork on the wall, writing themed of course. On display I have a large handmade wooden book with some of my favorite quotes painted on it. There is even an overhead solar light on the ceiling for gloomy days. And of course there are two windows because I get most energized by natural light.

My writing nook isn’t cluttered. Nothing kills my creativity more than a messy, disorganized space. It’s a cozy spot in my large back yard where I spend countless hours writing, editing, reading and relaxing.
